The mosaic flooring of the Roman era was found in Negrar di Valpolicella after coring made by the Superintendency of Verona

On May 26, 2020 in the municipality of Negrar di Valpolicella, near Verona, were found a series of mosaics that are an integral part of the flooring of a Roman villa of the 3rd century AD.

The discovery was made by the group of archaeologists of the Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape of Verona, under the direction of the archaeologist Gianni de Zuccato and the archaeologist Alberto Manicardi of SAP (Società Archeologica Padana S.r.l.).

The archaeological site of Negrar di Valpolicella

Among vineyards, where the famous Valpolicella red wine is produced, the Roman villa of Negrar had already been at the center of other excavations.

The Negrar site, located in the Cortellese district, has been known to archaeologists since 1887.

The first findings of a part of the mosaic pavement dating back to 1922 and 1975 and now it’s to the Archaeological Museum at the Roman Theater in Verona.

The mosaics of the villa, which are the only remains of the building, can be dated towards the end of the 3rd century AD, as reported by Paolo Lino Zanotto in the book “Mosaici Paleocristiani delle Venezie” (Del Bianco, 1963).

The mosaic stone tiles are still in bright colors (as in the photo above): red, white, pink, purple, orange and yellow.

The composition draws on the surface of the mosaic a series of geometric motifs called “Solomon’s knots” as they are formed by octagons alternating with rhombuses.

The excavations in the archaeological area had started in August 2019 and restarted after the stop due to the lockdown period (about COVID-19).

Now the goal is to complete the recovery of the entire pavement and make the area accessible to scholars, historians and even tourists.

The enhancement of the site with the creation of an archaeological area that can be used by citizens must be a point on which to find a solution.

We hope that the institutions and the ownership of the fund, which is currently cultivated with vineyards, will find an agreement in the future.

Looking at the present, satisfaction remains for Gianni de Zuccato and all the other archaeologist colleagues of having given light to these decorations.
